Tell us a little about YOU, the woman behind “B.Nute productions”?
First and foremost, I'm all about family. I am married to my best friend, have 2 amazing kids, and a newly adopted rescue dog. I live close to my parents and siblings and just love all our family get togethers. Family dinners, BBQ's, birthdays, weekends away and big family trips… we all have so much fun together! The best part is my family loves a good party. I've tested many of my themes and ideas on them with much great success!
When did you launch your blog/business?
In the summer of 2007, I indulged myself with a little babysitter time so I could start re-exploring my art and design after having left the workforce a few years earlier to be an at home mom. I had the goal that by the Fall, I would test the water and try to make my first sale. It took a lot of courage, but by September I walked into one of my favorite local gift stores and showed my work. Although I have worked in plenty of design firms, and large corporations, and have had many speaking engagements and large audience recognition, this felt different… I was showing my handmade creations, not a corporate web design or user interface design for software… I was showing "just something I made." Needless to say, I left the store elated with a list of items she wanted to purchase! B.Nute productions was officially in business!
If you could describe your style in 3 words what would that be?
{whimsical, vintage, retro}
What was your inspiration for starting your own blog & who/what inspires your work?
I love storytelling and creating experiences for people (something I explored in detail in my graduate thesis). A blog is a natural companion to party designs. My designs create a look, but adding a story to the theme makes it come alive!
As for what inspires me, if you could only see my office you'd realize how difficult it is for me to pick out only one or 2 inspirational items-- I have bookshelves stacked to the gills with inspiration! Any book that delves into retro or vintage styling, or type styles and fonts is an instant favorite!
What is the most satisfying part of what you do?
Hands down the most satisfying thing about my work is a happy customer! I love to hear their enthusiasm about my designs, as well as their excitement about their upcoming party or event. Their compliments put a smile on my face that lasts all day and well into the night, when many times I'm still working!
What was the most rewarding thing that has happened in your career so far?
I have had many rewarding moments in my past design careers (art direction, user interface design, etc.), but although I've been devoted to B.Nute productions for 3 years, I still feel things are just starting! I have so much energy, ideas, and enthusiasm… the sky is the limit. That being said, so far, I must say, it's definitely great customer feedback that keeps me going!
Can you tell us your favourite handmade item you have brought recently?
I bought a beautiful hand painted aquamarine silk scarf for my mom's birthday. She looks beautiful in that color!
What are your long term goals?
I'm having such a great time with B.Nute productions-- that I can only predict it will grow bigger and better! More designs, more complete party lines, full printable downloadable parties, as well as custom work! At this point, I'm still managing to be the jack-of-all-trades-- design, blog, accounting, shipping, marketing, customer service, etc., but I hope in the future to grow my business, add some great co-workers and take off!
Name three brands you couldn’t live without? and why?
Adobe Photoshop, Peet's or Starbucks coffee and any bookstore-- brick and mortar or online! I live behind Photoshop every day, and have been using it for as long as I can remember… Sad to say, I have had dreams where I'm using Photoshop key commands! As for coffee and a bookstore-- they are a perfect pair… but can easily be pulled apart and be just as much fun. I can spend hours in a bookstore-- rummaging through the design section, magazine section, children's section and more, just ask my kids. They can vouch for me on that one!
Describe your prefect Sunday?
I love to sleep in. It's true. That is definitely one of my indulgences. The best is both my kids are pretty late sleepers too… and now they are at an age they can get up on their own, and be as happy as clams, for quite some time! It makes Sunday mornings great! After waking up late, a nice strong cup of coffee and the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle… it's time for a big breakfast. After that is all said and done, it's getting close to noon, and I may still be in my PJ's!
A walk with the dog, a bookstore (see above), a family outing, and/or a big family get together (with parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews…), now that sounds like the ideal day!
Tell us your favourite party theme/palette?
This is a hard one! I do love several of my party themes right now-- Enchanted Woodland Fairy, Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Wizard of Oz… For the holidays, I really love a bright frosty turquoise and ruby red, like my Sugarplum Holiday Party!
What is your favourite holiday destination?
I have to say, my all time favorite destination has been Kia Ora Sauvage on the atoll of Rangiroa (in the South Pacific) . I spent a part of my honeymoon there, and it was so romantic-- like being on a deserted island! Obviously, I don't get to go there often, so my next favorite would have to be Lake Tahoe. We are fortunate to have a family house there-- I've been going since I was a little girl. It's such a special place for me… playing in the lake in the summer, skiing in the winter… it's can't be beat!
